Created in 1991 as "The Door-Opener Derby," the Scriptwriters Network's annual screenwriting competition was re-named in 1993 to honor acclaimed film and television writer CARL SAUTTER (1948-1993), one of the competition's founding fathers. It quickly became one of the signature programs of the Network, and had a very successful run until closing at the end of 2004. The Competition identified talented emerging writers and provided them direct access to top agents, production companies and TV shows. Winners and finalists went on to create such movies as Sweet Home Alabama and The New Gods, and wrote for numerous TV shows, including Girlfriends, The Nanny, Perfect World, Frasier, Baywatch, Star Trek: Voyager, Enterprise, Roswell, NYPD Blue, Battlestar Galactica and The West Wing.
